What is a sequence memory test?

A sequence memory test measures your short-term visual memory: how long a pattern you can hold in your head and reproduce. The grid flashes a sequence of tiles, and you tap them back in the same order. Each round it adds one more tile, so the pattern gets longer and longer until you slip. Your score is the number of rounds you complete.

How this test works

Press Start and watch carefully as the tiles light up one by one. When it's your turn, click the tiles in the exact order they flashed. Get the whole sequence right and you advance to a longer one; a single wrong tile ends the run. Most people clear 5–9 levels; reaching 14 or more lands you in the ⚡ Lightning tier.

Tips to remember more

Try "chunking" the pattern into small groups instead of memorising every tile separately, or trace the shape the sequence draws across the grid. Some players quietly say the positions out loud. Stay relaxed. Stress shrinks working memory. Practise regularly and your best level, saved on your device, will keep climbing.

The science: why seven is a wall

In 1956, psychologist George Miller published one of the most cited papers in psychology, "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two," observing that people can hold roughly 5–9 items in immediate memory. Modern research puts pure working-memory capacity even lower — around four chunks — which is exactly why most runs on this test die between levels 5 and 8: that's the point where the sequence outgrows what an untrained buffer can hold. The same span is what you use to keep a phone number in your head between reading it and dialing it.

Chunking: the cheat code that isn't cheating

The way past the wall is to make each remembered "item" carry more information. A nine-tile sequence is impossible as nine positions but manageable as three three-tile moves — "top row sweep, down the middle, corner hook." Concretely: group the flashes into twos and threes as they play, give each group a shape or a name, and rehearse the groups rather than the tiles. Spatial patterns help too — the sequence traces a path across the grid, and a path is one thing to remember, not many. This is a small-scale version of how memory athletes memorize decks of cards: never raw items, always structured chunks. Each level adds one tile, so every extra chunk you can build is worth several levels.

What this does and doesn't measure

This test isolates visual working memory span — short-term, order-sensitive storage. It's a different system from long-term memory (there's no overlap with remembering names or facts), and a different skill from the pure speed tests here: you can have elite reaction time and an average memory span, or the reverse.
