At a Grand Prix start, five red lights come on one second apart, hold for a randomized pause — anywhere up to a few seconds, chosen precisely so drivers can't predict it — and then all go out at once. Lights out means go. A car that moves before the lights go out earns a jump-start penalty, detected by transponders in the car, which is exactly what this test's false-start rule mimics. Measured driver reaction times off the line are typically around 200–250 ms; the legendary starts you see, where a driver seems to launch instantly, are usually a ~180–200 ms reaction plus a perfectly prepared clutch. Valtteri Bottas produced one of the famous ones — a start measured at roughly 0.2 seconds that was initially investigated as a false start because it looked too fast to be human.

Where your 250 milliseconds go

A visual reaction is a pipeline, and every stage costs time: the retina encodes the change (~20–40 ms), the visual cortex recognizes it (~80–100 ms), the brain selects the response and fires the motor cortex (~60–80 ms), and the finger physically moves (~30–50 ms). That's why genuine sub-100 ms visual reactions don't exist — a "reaction" that fast is a prediction that happened to be right, which is exactly what the false-start detector catches.
