Mouse Settings for Gaming
Mouse settings are the cheapest aim upgrade there is, and most people have them wrong in the same two ways: sensitivity too high, and settings that change from week to week. This guide explains DPI, eDPI and polling rate without the marketing fog, shows the ranges professional FPS players actually use, and gives you a simple method to find yours.
DPI, sensitivity and eDPI
DPI (dots per inch) is how many pixels the cursor moves per inch of physical mouse travel — a hardware setting on the mouse. In-game sensitivity is a multiplier the game applies on top. Neither number means anything alone, which is why gamers compare eDPI: DPI × in-game sensitivity. A player at 800 DPI and 0.5 sens (eDPI 400) has identical aim speed to one at 400 DPI and 1.0 sens.

The consistent finding across pro settings lists: professionals sit far lower than casual players expect. Most tactical-FPS pros hover around 700–1,000 eDPI, roughly a 25–35 cm swipe for a full 360° turn. Low sensitivity trades speed you rarely need for precision you always need.
Polling rate, debounce and lift-off
- Polling rate is how often the mouse reports its position: 125 Hz means every 8 ms, 1,000 Hz every 1 ms. The jump from 125 to 500/1,000 Hz is a real, feelable latency improvement; 4,000–8,000 Hz mostly warms your CPU. Set 1,000 Hz and stop thinking about it.
- Debounce time filters switch noise after each click. It matters for high-CPS clicking — details in the clicking guide — but has no effect on aim.
- Lift-off distance is how high the sensor keeps tracking when you lift the mouse to reposition. Low-sens players lift constantly, so a short lift-off (1 mm) prevents the cursor smearing during repositions.
- DPI itself: modern sensors are accurate at any common step. 800 DPI is the conventional base because Windows and games handle it cleanly — pick 800, get your speed from in-game sensitivity, and turn Windows "Enhance pointer precision" off (it's acceleration, and it makes the same swipe move a different distance depending on speed).
Finding your sensitivity in one session
- Set 800 DPI, 1,000 Hz, Windows acceleration off.
- Pick a mid sensitivity and do a run of our aim trainer (30 targets, time per target + accuracy).
- Halve the sensitivity, run again; double it, run again. One of the three will feel and score distinctly best.
- Bisect around the winner in smaller steps until changes stop improving your score. You'll converge in 15 minutes.
- Then lock it. Muscle memory is built on repetition of one setting. Changing sensitivity every session resets the clock; pros keep theirs for years.
Flicking vs tracking
Aim has two motor skills. Flicking — a fast snap to a new target and stop — rewards lower sensitivity and arm movement, and it's exactly what an aim-trainer target run measures. Tracking — keeping the crosshair glued to a moving target — leans on smooth wrist control and tolerates slightly higher sensitivity. Games weight them differently (tactical shooters are flick-heavy, hero shooters track-heavy), which is the honest reason two pros can disagree about eDPI. And whatever the numbers: crosshair placement, keeping the crosshair at head height where enemies appear, saves more milliseconds than any setting, because the fastest flick is the one you don't need. Settings tuned, warm up properly: a couple of aim trainer runs and aCPS burst before a session does more for your first match than any DPI tweak will.
