What is the spacebar test?

The spacebar test counts how many times you can press the spacebar in a fixed window. It's the same engine as our CPS test, but for your keyboard. Great for gamers who mash space to jump, sprint, or skip. On a phone you can tap the arena instead; the count works the same way.

How is it measured?

We listen for each spacebar press and ignore held-key auto-repeat, so only real, separate presses count. That means you can't cheat by holding the key down. Every tap has to be its own keystroke. The live counter shows your presses per second as you go.

Tips for a faster spacebar score

Use the side of your thumb and bounce off the key rather than pushing it down hard. Keep your wrist relaxed and steady. A tense hand tires fast and slows your rate. Mechanical keyboards with a short actuation distance register presses sooner, which helps on longer tests. Start with the 10-second mode to find your rhythm, then chase your personal best. It's stored on your device, so come back any time and try to beat it.

What counts as a fast spacebar speed?

Presses per secondRating
4–6Average — most first attempts land here
6–8Good — a solid, practiced rhythm
8–10Fast — usually a two-hand or bounce technique
10+Exceptional — sustained double digits is rare

Spacebar rates run slightly below mouse CPS for most people: the spacebar is a heavier key with longer travel than a mouse switch, and the thumb is a slower digit than the index finger. If your spacebar score beats your mouse score, you're in the minority — usually thumb-first phone typists.

Why your keyboard changes your score

Two switch properties matter here. Actuation distance is how far the key must travel before it registers: a typical membrane keyboard actuates around 2.5–3 mm, a standard mechanical switch at ~2 mm, and "speed" switches at ~1.2 mm — less travel per press means more presses per second. Reset distance is how far the key must rise before it can register again; a short reset lets you flutter the key near the actuation point instead of fully releasing it. Laptop scissor keys, with their shallow travel, are surprisingly competitive at this test. What doesn't help is holding the key down: the test ignores the operating system's auto-repeat, so only real, separate presses count.

Techniques worth trying

The classic upgrade is the two-finger drum: index and middle finger alternating on the bar, the same idea as butterfly clickingon a mouse. Some players rest the heel of the hand on the desk and vibrate the whole hand into the key, borrowing from jitter technique. And spacebar counting has had genuine viral moments — timed spacebar challenges made the rounds on TikTok, which is why "spacebar counter" is one of the most-searched speed tests. Whatever your method, the engine's the same as the CPS test: only clean, separate presses count.

Where spacebar speed actually matters

Bunny-hopping in shooters, jump-spamming in Minecraft parkour, skipping dialogue in RPGs, rhythm-game rolls — the spacebar is gaming's most mashed key, and a controlled fast press under pressure is a real micro-skill. It pairs naturally with typing rhythm too: if you want the whole-keyboard version of this measurement, take thetyping test or read theguide to typing faster.

Frequently asked questions

What is the spacebar test?
It counts how many times you can press the spacebar in a set time window, the keyboard equivalent of a CPS test. Your first press starts the timer and the live counter tracks your rate.
What is a good spacebar speed?
Around 6 to 8 presses per second is solid for most people. Past 9 you are in the fast range, and sustained double-digit rates are excellent.
Does key-repeat count against me?
No. The test ignores the operating system's auto-repeat, so only real, separate key presses are counted.
Can I take the test on mobile?
Yes. On a touch screen, tapping the arena counts the same as a spacebar press, so you can play without a keyboard.
Does the type of keyboard matter?
Yes. Shorter actuation and reset distances allow more presses per second, so speed-switch mechanical boards and even shallow laptop keyboards outscore deep membrane keyboards. The differences are modest compared with technique, though.
Why is my spacebar score lower than my CPS?
The spacebar travels further than a mouse switch and the thumb is a slower digit than the index finger, so most people press space about 1 to 2 per second slower than they click. Try the two-finger drum technique to close the gap.
